Röbel’s most famous tree is now even better known

February 24, 2023

Robel now has a celebrity. It is neither a personality of the city nor an animal contemporary. No, it’s the crown oak in Glienholz that’s making a big impression now. Although the tree has long been one of the sights of the region, since yesterday the “knobby” has officially been a “natural heritage tree”. The German Dendrological Society has been awarding this title to ancient trees since 2019, placing them under special protection. The crown oak near Minzow, which is in the area of the town of Röbel, is at least 600 years old and around 25 meters high.

The agreement on the “appointment” of the crown oak as a natural heritage tree was signed yesterday in addition to Röbel’s mayor Andreas Sprick, district administrator Heiko Kärger and Prof. Dr. Andreas Roloff signed by the Natural Heritage Board of Trustees. On April 22nd there will be a public announcement on site.

The crown oak, with a circumference of around ten meters at breast height, is only the 24th tree to receive the special title, with a total of 100 in Germany.

In the future, the German Dendrological Society will support the care of the special oak, with protection and environmental measures – with expertise, but also financially.

Only trees that are at least 400 years old and have a trunk circumference of more than 4 meters have a chance at the natural heritage title.

So the Crown Oak is now one of them, and its appointment and the attention of the dendrologists will certainly make it even better known than it already is.
