Roam Air: Company presents e-motorcycle for 1,500 euros – A light electric motorcycle with a range of up to 180 kilometers and a low price: The Roam Air electric motorcycle, manufactured in Kenya, should offer these aspects. In the basic version, it costs just 1,500 US dollars, the equivalent of around 1,470 euros – and, depending on the equipment, it should come with exchangeable batteries, off-road tires and reverse gear.
So far, electric motorcycles have been a niche market, as reported by “Netzwelt”. One of the reasons for this is the comparatively high acquisition costs, as stated in an article on the portal. With the low price, the Roam Air could prove to be more than attractive for those interested. The motorcycle was designed for the markets on the African continent – and is also assembled there.
The manufacturer’s portfolio includes even more:
Roam also offers solar panels and electric buses. The company emphasizes that a buyer, even if the machine is fully financed, has to calculate with lower monthly costs than if he had bought a motorcycle with a conventional drive and 150 cubic centimeter displacement. The Roam Air is designed for mobility, high transport weight and robustness in accordance with the areas of application on the continent.
The machine weighs 135 kilograms empty and has a steel frame. Inside is the electric motor with its torque of 185 Newton meters. This takes the Roam Air to its top speed of 90 kilometers per hour within five seconds – at this value it was also electronically locked. Each of the two replaceable batteries has a capacity of 3.24 kilowatt hours. According to the manufacturer, the machine offers a range of 180 kilometers when both are fully charged.
The Roam Air has five gears and one reverse gear
Since motorcycles are often used on the continent to connect remote locations or large urban areas and to move goods, this reverse gear should make maneuvering easier. Permitted total weight: 220 kilograms. The standard version of the motorcycle costs the equivalent of 1,470 euros, the two-battery variant costs the equivalent of 2,012 euros. According to “Netzwelt”, the first vehicles are to be rolled out over the course of the year.
But Roam does not want to bring the Air to the mass market until 2023. It is unknown whether the motorcycle will be delivered worldwide and could therefore also be available in Germany at some point at a reasonable price. According to Roam, however, it is already considering global availability.
