Road exempted from traffic for a few hours every Sunday to exercise

“Stop contemplating and start moving”. With these words, Warrior Fit Movement director-owner Rajiv Makhanlal heralded the first Safe Exercise Area project on Sunday, December 19, 2021, at doctor Sophie Redmond Street. It is an initiative whereby a section of the road will be cleared from traffic every Sunday between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and available to those who want to move.

Minutes before Makhanlal’s call, President Santokhi had officially kicked off the project.

The head of state, who also participated for a while, calls the project one of the many initiatives that the government has in the pipeline to make the community healthier. He stated that ‘health units’ will be set up in all neighborhoods to make the population aware of a healthy lifestyle and to teach them a ‘healthy lifestyle’.

Kick-off was at around 8:00 AM. The stretch of road between the roundabout and Van Idsingastraat was closed to motor traffic between 6:30 am and 10:00 am. This will be the case every Sunday so that those who wish to move have the opportunity to do so in a safe area.

The Safe Exercise Area project is an initiative of the Ministries of Health and Regional Development and Sport (ROS) and the District Commissioner for Paramaribo North-East. The intention is to encourage the Surinamese population to exercise more. This initiative was welcomed by the attendees, who made some suggestions to make the project even better.
