RIVM site and telephone number for questions about coronavirus breaking records NOW

The number of visitors to the website of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) continues to rise. In total, the institute had more than 23 million page views since mid-January. In addition, the Ministry’s call center for questions about the corona virus is called flat. In the past few days, an average of 2,800 people have called each day with questions.

In both cases it concerns record figures. Never before have the website and the call center been so massively consulted, RIVM and the Ministry of Health have informed NU.nl on Monday.

The website passed the limit of one million page views every day last week. On Sunday 8 March the website received more than two million page views for the first time. The RIVM site achieves around 100,000 page views on average on a busy day.

RIVM signals peak moments after the publication of new figures on the number of infections in the Netherlands or elsewhere in Europe.

The Ministry’s information number also broke a record on 8 March

The telephone line of the ministry also had a record pressure on Sunday 8 March. After the announcement of new figures, 3,057 people contacted the call center.

The ministry announced last week that it would scale up the call center’s capacity to answer all questions. The most frequently asked question to call center staff is: I am sick, can this be the new corona virus? The second question is: when do you have a chance of getting the corona virus?

The coronavirus in short

  • The virus spreads mainly through cough and sneeze drops that hang in the air for a short time. Anyone who shows no symptoms is hardly a risk of infection.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. However, this figure is falling due to all precautions.
  • The vast majority have mild (flu-like) symptoms.
  • Almost all deaths concern older or already sick people.
