BILTHOVEN – Do not shake hands and wash your hands often becomes the new normal and we have to find that normal. As this situation lasts longer, following these rules should not become more difficult as people also get used to it.
That says Hans Brug, general director of RIVM, on Sunday in the TV program Buitenhof about the rules of conduct that have been set up to prevent the spread of the corona virus.
BASIC RULES
Brug says it’s better for people to stick to the basic rules anyway because it also reduces other infections. For example, according to him, fewer people contract diarrhea, because the hands are better washed before preparing food.
According to Brug, a study by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment among 90,000 Dutch people shows that the vast majority of people adhere to the rules of conduct well and that they are able to maintain it well.
It seems to become a habit already. With the slow reversal of the lockdown, it is necessary to constantly discover how people adhere to the rules and how they can comply, says Brug, who specializes in health and behavioral science.
SECOND WAVE
He emphasizes that a possible second wave in corona infections depends on everyone’s behavior to stick to the basic rules. “We have to live with the virus.” According to him, if there is a vaccine, it will be able to limit the consequences of the disease.
Furthermore, Brug says that RIVM and scientists still learn from the new virus every week through all the research and information. “The knowledge about the virus is already great, but we don’t know much yet.”
