Rising Epidemic of Teenage Gambling Linked to Illegal Movie Viewing Sites

◀ Anchor ▶

We recently reported that an organization that was running an illegal gambling site valued at 500 billion won was caught, and that some middle school students among the gang were acting like salespeople and recruiting members.

When we looked at where and how teenagers accessed gambling sites, we found that illegal movie viewing sites were being used as a conduit.

Reporter Seoyoung Song will report.

It looks like an ordinary online video service, but it is an illegal site that uploads videos without permission.

It is popular among teenagers because there is no subscription fee, and their source of revenue is flashy advertisements for illegal gambling sites.

Most of these gambling sites allow you to sign up and even recharge cyber money without adult verification.

Even teenagers can gamble as much as they want if they want to.

In fact, students say that it is not uncommon for them to start gambling after hearing a friend say they have “won a lot of money.”

″I think even in our middle school, all grades did it. Three and a half… I think there were about 90 people.″

″Even when leaving the reading room, there are kids who say things like, ‘Someone won 200 (10,000 won) with 00.’ ″

The problem is that it doesn’t end there.

There were also cases where people borrowed money from people around them to gamble and then turned to crimes such as theft and fraud because they were unable to repay the loan.

″He was sent to juvenile detention center for stealing money to finance gambling, but he still doesn’t know what he did wrong.″

A total of 171 teenagers were arrested for gambling crimes last year, more than double the number from the previous year, and recently, three middle school students were arrested while working as salespeople for an illegal gambling site.

However, even if the site is closed, it is reopened only with a change of name, and since most of them are based overseas, it is more difficult to catch the operator.

If you report it to the police, they can temporarily freeze the account that receives gambling funds. One civic group is working with students to collect information on illegal gambling sites and report it to the police.

″Students collect receipts and send them to us. If you send me all the evidence, I will document it and file a complaint.”

″I think it is also necessary to actively operate a reporting system. Even on campus. Just not being able to spread this to other students would have a significant impact… ″

It is pointed out that it is time to take all-round measures, such as activating reporting, increasing the number of counseling and treatment centers specializing in youth gambling, which only exists in about 10 locations across the country, and strengthening prevention education.
