Rishi Sunak succeeds Liz Truss as the new British Prime Minister | NOW

Rishi Sunak becomes the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Sunak, 42, was the only candidate to have the required support of at least 100 Conservative MPs. This made him the only viable candidate to succeed Liz Truss’s resignation as Conservative Party leader and British Prime Minister.

Sunak lost to Truss in early September in the battle for Boris Johnson’s succession. Truss stepped down last week after his tax plans turned out to be disastrous.

Premiership candidates had to get the support of at least 100 Conservative MPs before 3pm (Dutch time). Only Sunak could do that, confirmed the 1922 Leadership Election Committee.

Member of Parliament Penny Mordaunt had also declared himself a candidate. She failed to gather the hundred statements of support needed from her party members in parliament. In a statement, you said you “100% support” Sunak.

Johnson, who stepped down earlier this year, has also reportedly considered running for office. Sunday done confessed that he refused to do so. Johnson would have had enough support among his party members, but he thinks an offer for leadership “is not the right thing to do”.

Sunak is expected to be sworn in as prime minister on Friday. It inherits a country in political and economic difficulty.
