[국제]The global ‘diplomatic war’ begins … The Korea-China summit is missing

[앵커]

Starting with the opening of the ASEAN meeting today, major multilateral diplomatic events such as the G20 and APEC will be held one after the other until next weekend.

However, we have not heard of a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, one of the pillars of our four-way diplomacy.

How come? The correspondent Kang Jeong-gyu in Beijing reports this.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang flew to Cambodia, the host country of the ASEAN Conference.

We plan to meet with leaders from developing countries in Southeast Asia, including Korea, China and Japan.

It is being interpreted as an attempt to strengthen friendship ahead of next week’s G20-APEC summit, when President Xi Jinping is likely to attend.

This is because President Xi desperately needs an image of a central power leader second to that of the United States on the stage of multilateral diplomacy for the first time in his third term.

[중국 관영 CCTV : 중국은 아세안 관련 여러 회의에 초점을 맞춰 발전과 협력을 기대하고, 다자주의와 자유무역을 견지할 것입니다.]

There was no face-to-face meeting with President Xi Jinping on President Yun Seok-yeol’s tour itinerary, amid concerns that it could turn into a diplomatic field war.

Even if we meet at the event, it is very likely that it will be an informal meeting.

The reason the Korea-China summit couldn’t be coordinated in advance is because relations between the two countries have gotten so cold recently.

In the missile provocation phase by North Korea, trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the United States and Japan has become closer, but there has been no cooperation with China.

Rather, China prides itself on its regular communication with North Korea and has made it clear that it opposes further sanctions against North Korea.

There are also rumors that China was behind South Korea’s defeat at the UN Human Rights Council last month.

Earlier, when we voted in favor of hosting the Xinjiang-Uyghur Human Rights Forum, China urged developing countries in Southeast Asia not to elect South Korea.

The South Korea-China summit, which has disappeared from the stage of multilateral diplomacy, on the other hand, would be active in secret contacts for the summit between the United States, China and Japan.
