Rishi Sunak has accused Sir Keir Starmer of utilizing the House of Commons and “the tragedy” of Brianna Ghey’s situation to display “the worst of politics”. This exchange occurred when the Prime Minister made a jest regarding Starmer’s “definition of a woman” on the day of Brianna’s mother’s Parliament visit. Sir Keir criticized the Prime Minister, demanding an apology on the same matter. However, Sunak disapproved of the demand, claiming it to be “sad and wrong” and refusing to apologize.

The transgender teen’s father pressed Mr. Sunak to apologize for his controversial remarks. The Prime Minister remained firm and reiterated that his statement was solely based on Keir Starmer’s multiple policy U-turns. Sunak asserted that it was a separate and legitimate point and not connected to the tragedy. The confrontation unfolded during Prime Minister’s Questions as Sunak listed numerous instances where Starmer had changed his stance on identification.

The Labour leader immediately responded with disdain, addressing Brianna’s mother’s presence in the chamber and denouncing Sunak’s integrity. He insinuated that the Prime Minister had no responsibilities despite masquerading as a person of integrity. Brianna’s mother, Esther Ghey, had not heard the remarks directly during the incident as she arrived shortly after it occurred. Her former headteacher, Emma Mills, stated in an interview that Esther needs time to grasp the full context of the situation.

Esther Ghey’s 16-year-old daughter, Brianna, tragically lost her life after being fatally stabbed 28 times in a park. With tensions high after the controversial remarks, leader of the House Penny Mordaunt appealed for reflection, noting that Mr. Sunak is a caring individual. Mordaunt hoped that Sunak would not only consider the Ghey family’s perspective but also the transgender community and their loved ones, who may be present in the political arena.

Attributing the government’s stance to protect women’s safety and dignity, Mordaunt stressed the need for certainty and assurance for transgender individuals. The government continues to hold the opposition accountable for their policy inconsistencies and U-turns. Mordaunt further urged the Leader of the Opposition, Keir Starmer, to reflect on his actions as well.
