Riots in Sweden again after Koran burning by right-wing extremists | Abroad

Earlier, the anti-Islam protest led to resistance and riots in Örebro and Linköping, in which several police officers were injured.

Things went wrong again in Landskrona on Saturday. Masked youths threw rocks at the police, barricaded roads and set cars on fire, according to the Aftonbladet newspaper. To avoid worse, the chief of police decided to move the manifestation of Paludan, leader of the Stram Kurs (Hard Line) group, to a more secure place in Malmö, in the south of the country.

Things got out of hand in Örebro on Friday evening. Eight police officers standing guard over the demonstration were injured, four of them seriously. Stram Kurs is an anti-Islamist club that organizes Koran burnings, among other things. That intention alone led to a counter-demonstration, after which the situation got out of hand.

Although Danish politician Paludan had been given permission to hold a meeting in Örebro, this caused so much unrest in the city that the police quickly decided to intervene. Warning shots were also fired. Officers were mainly injured by stones and hand-to-hand fighting. Several police cars were set on fire.

On Thursday, a similar meeting in Linköping also turned into disturbances. There, three law enforcement officers had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.

Stram Kurs frontman Paludan has been regularly involved in right-wing extremist actions in recent years, also in other countries. In November 2020, he was arrested in France and sent across the border.
