Riots and injuries caused by a police officer shot near George Floyd’s place of death

An angry group of people has vandalized two police cars in Minneapolis after the death of a man shot by a police officer about 16 km from the place where black George Floyd died during an arrest last May, Reuters reported.

Some of the 100 or so people gathered were visibly angry, and one carried a poster reading “Justice for George Floyd.” They clashed with riot police after a police officer shot a man in a Minneapolis suburb.

Police used rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades at the crowd. Police cars were pelted with stones, and a Twitter post by a Minneapolis Old Tribune reporter showed people jumping on the hoods and roofs of both cars.

The murdered man was identified by relatives as 20-year-old Donte Wright. According to a press release from the local police, he was stopped for violating the traffic rules at 2 pm local time. Police found he had an arrest warrant and tried to detain him, but Wright got into his car. One of the police officers fired his pistol, hitting the driver, who traveled some distance before crashing into another car. The victim died at the scene.

Tensions in Minneapolis are very high, while the trial against white police officer Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd by pressing his neck with a knee for 9 minutes, has been going on for three weeks, Reuters notes.
