Riots and Arrests in Berlin as Thousands of Police Officers Patrol New Year’s Eve Celebrations

This time around 4,500 police officers were on patrol in the German capital, where violent clashes broke out at the turn of the year. About 15 law enforcement officers were injured during the night.

Police reported that people in Berlin threw firecrackers at police, firefighters and each other and tried to make Molotov cocktails.

One of the incidents took place in Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, where around 500 people set off firecrackers. Police dispersed the group near the Neptune Fountain and checked it for pyrotechnic devices. But then a group of about 200 people started shooting firecrackers at the police and the police detained several people.

In Berlin, approximately 45,000 people welcomed the year 2024 at the Brandenburg Gate.

In Frankfurt, Hamburg and elsewhere in Germany, the year 2024 was welcomed peacefully without major incidents. However, an 18-year-old boy died in Koblenz when a firecracker exploded.

The police were especially alert in Cologne, taking into account the suspicion of a possible terrorist attack in the Cologne Cathedral. It has already been reported that three more people were detained in Germany on Sunday in connection with the plan to attack the Cologne Cathedral. They are believed to be related to a Tajik citizen who was detained on December 24 on suspicion of planning an attack on the Cologne Cathedral.

About 1,000 police officers provided security for the Cologne Cathedral on Sunday evening.
