RI Reminds Australia about Nuclear Submarines

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Indonesia remind Australia to fulfill its obligations regarding nuclear weapons restrictions after the Kangaroo Country decided to develop nuclear-powered submarines.

Indonesia emphasizes the importance of Australia’s commitment to continue to fulfill its obligations regarding nuclear non-proliferation,” the Indonesian government said in a statement on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday (17/9).

Through the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized that Indonesia encourages Australia to continue to fulfill its obligations to maintain peace, stability and security in the region according to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that Indonesia is very concerned about the arms race and the projection of military power in the region which has been increasing in recent times.

Indonesia encourages Australia and other related parties to continue promoting dialogue in resolving differences peacefully,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote.

The statement continued, “In this regard, Indonesia emphasizes the importance of respecting international law including the 1982 UNCLOS in maintaining peace and security in the region.”

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released this statement when the regional atmosphere heated up after Australia announced military cooperation with Britain and the United States on Thursday (16/9).

Under the deal, Australia would be given access to US technology to build eight nuclear-powered submarines.

In a joint statement, Australia, the US and the UK said they are working together to counter the growing power and influence of “adversaries” in the region, particularly the South China Sea.

In response to the deal, the Chinese Embassy in the US said countries should not build exclusive blocks that target or harm the interests of third parties.

Apart from China, France and the European Union also protested against this trilateral cooperation between Australia, the US and the UK.
