REVIEW: Vladimír Mišík climbed a bit higher

If the album One Meet You was a successful result of the creative union of representatives of two musical generations, the novel Night Image is its coronation, with the proviso that if there is a sequel, it is possible that the coronation will be another. The two simply sat down, their musical perception resonates perfectly, and both of them used their best interpretive and authorial skills.

Mišík sings on a new record with taste, in very good form, with energy corresponding to his age and with the maximum functionality of his expression in each composition. His performance is as calm as the whole album. In contrast to the previous one, the Night Image is free of any tension. If, taking into account the texts, we perceive night and balancing associated with the celebration of life as its main themes, then the atmosphere is completely natural.

Mišík recorded a record with Ostrouchov’s band Blue Shadows. It consists of skilled musicians, playful and imaginative. Together, they arranged the songs so that the album ensemble was compact, yet musically rich in color. And so, in addition to traditional Mišík rock songwriting, the songs feature influences of jazz, blues, country, folk or gospel, all dosed so that it does not attract attention as a peculiarity, but as an excellent shift in the album’s mood to styles that Mišík is emotionally close to.

In addition, guests from abroad (Blind Boys of Alabama, Jamey Haddad, Davy Spillane, Dónal Lunny, Jerry Douglas and others) and their home (Ondřej Pivec, Radek Baborák Orquestrina, Lenka Dusilová, Robert Křesťan and others) took their honest work on the album. ). They were given enough space to show off their skill, while not stealing the song for themselves and keeping it in the spirit of Miškov. This then guarantees the already mentioned characteristic singer’s performance.

Composers Ostrouchov, Mišík and in one collaboration also Ondřej Pivec (Sen) wrote really beautiful songs. Without exception, because there is no one on this record that could be doubted in any way or would not fit into the mood of the collection. In the texts they relied on significant verses of Czech poets (Jan Skácel, František Hrubín, Václav Hrabě and others) and also in a similarly attuned Mišík, when, for example, his text Above the Cliffs does not match words with the masters’ poems.

Mišík is personal in the lyrics, which is evident in the honestly current Krok sun krok, emotional Dream and I can’t sleep or in the commemorative 1960s. At the end of the album is Ostrouchov’s text set to music by David Stypka (Thank you), which perfectly characterizes Mišík’s impression of life, which is further given to him. And even though the moment is approaching a pathetic tone, nothing like that has happened thanks to the performance, the mood of the song and reality.

Night Image is an excellent album. It combines professionalism, passion, emotions, professional erudition, and although it is calm and sometimes a little dark, the joy of music and being. Vladimír Mišík climbed a bit higher on it.
