REVIEW: Mig 21 continues to create atmosphere and improve mood

When she started releasing albums, she offered exactly three in a short time. From 2001 to 2004 it was Easy to Live, It Made Us Clear and Pop Pop Pop. Then she waited ten years for a fourth album called Album, in the meantime she served the best and a live recording with the Lelek Orchestra and is adding a fifth line now, after seven years. It’s called Juice of the Night and offers a dozen songs.

As for the band’s musical and lyrical philosophy, it has remained essentially the same. Inconspicuously, however, the player elements associated with the natural musical and composer’s desire to give the songs more than the traditional song structure have been added. So the moments when the wind instruments are played or the piano is added bring a nice revival, for example, the vocal gradation in the song Guess What a Woman Asks is successful, the choice of singing guests was happy.

Mig 21 is still a formation that offers basically ordinary pop-rock songs with a special charm. This connection makes her sound friendly, kind and helpful. At concerts, it turns into a spontaneous one, because there the album versions of the songs get another spark and energy that suits them naturally.

This also applies to the new album. The songs on it are essentially studio. They are captured flawlessly, every sound in them is legible, the gradations and dynamics are clear, the text is understandable, however, the energetic cabaret brand is missing, which the band easily achieves at concerts.

The new songs of MiG 21 have a tasteful melodic move. The singers supported the singing refrains with imaginative slogans, thus enabling each of them to settle in the favor of the listeners. This group does not calculate, it does not create purposefully for the audience. Equipped with insight, memories and life experiences captured in the lyrics, she defiantly plays with music and melody, which is a fun and appropriate act.

The playfulness is evident, for example, in the songs Svádíš and Tykej mi, when Erika Stárková (has an interesting voice color, certainty, drive and expression) and Martha Issová sing with Jiří Macháček from Mig in the first, while Matěj Ruppert and Radek Škarohlíd excel in his reach.

In addition to excellent guest singers, Macháček’s expressive and range reserves are evident. Tykej could easily be an example of what can be done in the songs of MiG 21 with above-standard voice equipment. But such races are not a topic for the band. All the more so when Macháček’s voice color gives its sound a hallmark of individuality.

Juice of the Night is a pleasant album with balanced songs, from which it will be fair time to choose the ones that will survive into the years to come. As indicated, for this group, it basically doesn’t matter which one it will be. Above all, he creates an atmosphere in his compositions, improves his mood and can make him sing. That’s not enough.
