Review: HyperBrawl Tournament – NWTV

HyperBrawl Tournament is a game developed for various platforms by development studio Milky Tea Limited from Liverpool. We got to work with the Nintendo Switch version and you can read what we think of the game in this review.

HyperBrawl Torunament is a sports-like arcade game where you can play alone or with friends in an in-arena where you have to win matches by scoring as many goals as possible. As simple as this may sound, nothing could be further from the truth. There are several elements that make this not as easy as it seems. For example, there are different playing fields where use is made of different obstacles such as pillars, but also moving walls. In addition, characters are equipped with dangerous weapons and attacks to make it difficult for the opponent. The game is very much like the popular Rocket League, only there are no cars and the ball is of a smaller size. The idea of a closed arena and small teams that can attack or knock each other on the way to a goal is familiar.

Unfortunately it plays a little less smoothly than the aforementioned Rocket League. You will get a short explanation of the controls, but it is so simple that you will not benefit from it when you play your first real match. In addition, it also takes some practice to throw the ball towards the goal without haphazardly throwing it around the arena in the hope that it ends up well. Each player has an energy bar and a life bar. The operation of this is quite simple, the energy bar depletes when you use special attacks. So you cannot keep hitting your opponent indefinitely, so you have to work somewhat tactically. The competition is made even more exciting by using moving walls and floor parts, so you also have to take this into account.

HyperBrawl Tournament

In HyperBrawl Tournament it is possible to find and unlock new weapons and other accessories to dress up your characters according to your taste. This also ensures that you have a goal to work towards. Although you can dress and adjust the players differently with different accessories, it is still quite difficult to keep them apart in the fast matches. Especially when playing the game on the Switch in handheld mode. The characters are relatively small because the entire playing field is shown. Graphically it is not a high-quality game, but due to the use of bright colors and effects and the available accessories, this does not really matter.

HyperBrawl Tournament

There are several modes present in it HyperBrawl Tournament with which you can play both offline and online against and with other gamers. You can participate in matches or tournaments, but you almost always play two against two. With insufficient real players, the team will be filled with bots, or computer-controlled players. You can choose from different types of players including Core, Swift and Tank. The latter are powerful, but slower players compared to the fast and nimble Swift players. Core includes the characters that are somewhat in between.

The gameplay is quite simple and after having played a few games you have already mastered the controls. It will mainly be taking and scoring which makes it monotonous rather quickly. To make the matches a bit more spectacular, you need to practice with the right stick. This makes it possible to throw the ball with effect so that you can throw the ball around a wall or player. HyperBrawl Tournament is a nice game if you want to play a game with some friends in between, but unfortunately it will not ensure long evenings of gaming.
