Champions League assistant referee, Octavian Sovre revealed the real reason why he was chasing Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland in order to get an autograph.
The line judge’s action was carried out when Dortmund played against Manchester City in the quarter-final first leg duel which the hosts won 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
Sovre appeared to ask for the Norwegian international striker’s signature while in the stadium hallway. His attitude sparked a wide debate among people, many of whom questioned his professionalism as a competition official.
However, it turned out that what Sovre was doing was part of a campaign to collect signatures from top sports stars to be auctioned off at a charity event in his home country of Romania, the proceeds of which were donated to people with autism.
President of the Bihor SOS Autism Association, Simona Zlibut told Sports Gazette: “The signature is for a noble cause.”
