Resurrection from 0: 2. Thiem reversed the final with Zverev and is the champion of the US Open

Crazy course, nervous moments, not very handsome, even more fierce battle.

However, what the finals of the grand slam in New York lacked in beauty was made up for by the incredible story of the winner, Dominic Thiem. After a tragic start, the Austrian turned the unfavorable course to win 2: 6, 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3 and 7: 6 (8: 6) with a heroic effort.

At the end of the decisive act, the power of the weight of the moment binds the hands of the actors of the final fully.

Thiem vs. Zverev

finals of the US Open in a detailed report

The two leading representatives of the new tennis generation on the biggest stages have so far lived in the shadow of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, now within reach of their dream grand slam laurel.

Zverev was closer to the cup throughout the match, in the fifth act he almost held it in his hands. He led 5: 3 and served to win. However, he did not tame the easy call at the net and the chances were gone. Thiem immediately took over the opponent’s hesitation and with a series of games he developed a 6: 5 lead and it was also enough to keep him serviced to close the match.

But he didn’t stop nervousness either, so the battle escalated into a tiebreak.

Zverev shivered more in him – he shot away his hopes with two double mistakes. But even Thiem was not sure. At 6: 4, he lost both match points, at the first he was stopped by the net, at the second the German sent a faint second serve, but the Austrian again broke the circulating forehand along the line in exchange.

Despite these mines, with an amicable score of 6: 6, he was able to concentrate better again with Thiem, who had lined the juice lurking by the net in cold blood. And after Zverev’s subsequent backhand mistake, he was able to fall on his back and fully enjoy the feeling of the premiere grand slam title.

“We have known Sasha since 2014, when we were both on the edge of the top 100 and we immediately developed a great friendship,” Thiem recalled at the ceremony. “It’s amazing that we made it to this final, I wish we could have two winners today, we both deserve it.”

But as is well known, the champion will only come out of the tournament.

And after the first two sets of the final, few would have thought that the Austrian would turn his fourth grand slam final into the first title. Although he had previously experienced the atmosphere of the most important tennis match, unlike his opponent, he was initially bound by a cruel tremor on Arthur Ash’s court.

Thiem lost the first set clearly 2: 6, in the second he lost 1: 5 and was ready for a debacle. He could not lean on his service, on the contrary, Zverev served wonderfully and even in one exchange he added one winning stroke after another.

At the end of the second set, however, the Austrian managed to lay the foundations for his spectacular turn.

Although he was not saved by three averted sets and a series of three won games in the set, Thiem checked out that he could still do something about the match.

In the third act, he lost service again and lost 1: 2, but the picture of the game slowly began to change. The beast seemed to realize how close he was to victory and began to make mistakes as Thiem gradually came to life.

The Austrian clarified the service and at 5: 4 he took the set with a break and forced a continuation. Even in the next set, his only success on the return was enough, as he was already confident in his own service.

He was also more successful in exchanges, while in the second set he showed 13 unforced errors, in the fourth he limited himself to only two.

Thiem showed more patience even in the wild ending of the decisive act, in which he completed a perfect turn. He became the first grand slam champion outside of the Big Three in four years.

And in two weeks Roland Garros begins, where in the last two years he has always reached the finals …
