Results of research in America Call one-third of Covid-19 patients experiencing changes in mental function

PR BEKASI – Studies conducted in the United States on patients Covid-19 found that one third of patients experienced signs of mental state changes ranging from function neurological which worsens like confusion to coma-like unresponsiveness.

Any change in mental functioning can adversely affect medical outcomes, according to the study published Monday in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology.

The study studied the records of the first 509 coronavirus patients hospitalized, from March 5 to April 6, at 10 hospitals in the North West Medical health system in the Chicago area, USA.

These patients were hospitalized as patients without changes in mental function.

According to Dr. Igor Koralnik, the study’s senior author and head of global neurological and infectious diseases at Northwestern Medicine said that after they were discharged, only 32 percent of patients with mental dysfunction could still handle routine daily activities such as cooking and paying bills.

In contrast, 89 percent of patients without changes in mental function were able to manage these activities without assistance.

Patients with altered mental function, namely encephalopathy, make sufferers nearly seven times more likely to die than those without that type of problem.
