Results of Hessian State Elections: Free Democrats and Social Democrats Secure Seats in the State Parliament

Free Democrats, more than the candidates of other parties, are used to election evenings being characterized by great uncertainty for a long time. This was also the case in the Hessian state elections on Sunday. René Rock, previously leader of the Liberal parliamentary group in the Hessian state parliament, had to show just as good nerves as Oliver Stirböck. The five percent hurdle seemed insurmountable for the FDP at times on Sunday evening, but in the end it was just about 5.0 percent. Stirböck from Offenbach had position eight on the state list – and the Liberals now have exactly eight seats up for grabs.

The Social Democrat Nadine Gersberg also applied for the mandate in constituency 43 Offenbach-Stadt in this state election, although her chances were not very good from the start. She was in 19th place on the state list. This means she is now moving back into the state parliament. She was moved up in the previous legislative period because Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel resigned from his mandate in September 2019. In the 2018 state elections, exactly 19 SPD members came to parliament via the state list, ten via constituency mandates, Gersberg initially not.
