One year late, the New York City Marathon celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 7, 2021.
What began in 1970 with 127 participants, 55 of whom were finishers, has developed into the largest marathon event in the world in more than five decades. Because normally more than 50,000 athletes finish the New York Marathon annually.
The route at the New York Marathon
The route led from Forth Wadsworth through the most beautiful parts of the city. The athletes got to see the Queensboro Bridge, Central Park and Columbus Circle. The Guggenheim Museum and the Madison Avenue Bridge were also part of the beautiful route, for which the athletes had six and a half hours. This year there was a reduced field of 33,000 runners. Due to the travel restrictions, however, there were still a few thousand fewer runners at the start.
Who will win the 50th Big Apple marathon?
The focus of the race was of course on the top runners. After all, it was about winning the big anniversary edition. Two years ago the Kenyans won the last event Joyciline Jepkosgei and Geoffrey Kamworor two former world record holders over the half marathon distance. Jepkosgei ran to victory two years ago with 2:22:38 hours, Geoffrey Kamworor had 23 seconds ahead of the first pursuer after 2:08:13 hours. Jepkosgei only missed the course record by seven seconds. Unbeaten Peres Jepchirchir
In the women’s race she was an Olympic marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir the clear favorite. The former half marathon world record holder from Kenya has won all of her marathon races so far.
