Restructuring Progress: Royal Spanish Football Federation Dismisses Communications Director

The Rfef advances in its restructuring. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (Rfef) has announced this afternoon that dispenses with its communications director, Pablo García Cuervo.

With this decision, the governing body of Spanish football advances in the structural changes demanded by the National Team players. After Luis Rubiales’ non-consensual kiss to Jenni Hermoso in the last World Cup final, the players requested the restructuring of several internal organizations of the federation: the women’s soccer organization chart, the presidential cabinet and general secretary, the communication and marketing and integrity management. In addition, they demanded the resignation of the current president of the Rfef.

García Cuervo entered the Federation in 2018 to take charge of the press office of the senior Spanish team, and in 2021 he was appointed communications director of the Rfef.

His departure is added to that of the former president of the former president of the Rfef, Luis Rubiales; the general secretary, Andreu Camps; the integrity director, Miguel García Caba and the coach, Jorge Vilda.

García Cuervo’s dismissal occurs just two days after the meeting between the Rfef, the Higher Sports Council (CSD) and the Futpro union with the aim of plaunch the mixed commission that seeks to promote women’s football.

Víctor Francos himself participated in the meeting on behalf of the CSD; the general director of Sports, Fernando Molinero; the director of the Presidential Cabinet, Juan Fernández Carnicer; and the advisor to the Presidential Cabinet, Nerea Huete. Present on behalf of the RFEF were the director of the Presidential Cabinet, Elvira Andrés; and the Director of Competitions, Alfredo Olivares; while lawyers Reyes Bellver and José David Martínez attended on behalf of the players.

At the meeting it was agreed that, in addition to the CSD and the Rfef, the Futpro union would be part of the mixed commission, “in which the players of the senior Spanish soccer team have formally requested to delegate their representation.”

As a first step, it was decided to prepare a protocol of action for the new commission, which must “be read by the parties so that they can send the contributions they consider necessary,” as explained by Víctor Francos. “We are going to send you a document with those changes that came out at the meeting,” added the president of the CSD.
