Restrictions on Abortion Access in Crimea – Impact on Population Growth and Demographics

Access to abortion is restricted in Crimea

Crimean Health Minister Konstantin Skorupskis, appointed by the Kremlin, informed that the private clinics working on the peninsula have allegedly agreed to voluntarily stop performing abortions. This happened after the meeting of the heads of medical institutions with representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, who called on the clinics to contribute to the improvement of the country’s demographic situation, writes “The Moscow Times”.

Skorupskis added that state-funded medical institutions are more suitable for performing abortions, because they provide psychological help to women and they also receive information about available social support measures.

In Russia, women can have abortions unconditionally up to the 12th week of pregnancy, but abortions can be performed up to the 22nd week of pregnancy in case of rape or if the pregnancy seriously threatens the health of the woman.

However, women have to wait 48 hours to a week between the first visit to the doctor and the abortion procedure before they can consider their choice.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that “the problem of abortion in Russia is acute”, but that it is necessary to think about how to solve it – whether to set restrictions or to support families with children more.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia’s population has declined. This is largely due to high mortality and low birth rates.

In 2022, the regeneration of the population of Russia, or the natural increase, was -0.38%. Assuming that this pace will be maintained, the population of Russia will decrease by half in the next 184 years (according to the data of the official statistics office “Rosstat”, Russia had 146.4 million inhabitants last year), writes “The Bell”. The UN predicts that in 2100 the population of Russia will be 112.2 million.
