Restoring the graves: painstaking work

The machine. Cemeteries: duty of memory.

Begun in 2016, the rehabilitation of Machinese cemeteries was initiated by the municipality under the leadership of Marie-Christine Vingdiolet, then first assistant. Since then, a working commission

passionately tackles this mission.

“Many monuments are in danger of collapsing, potentially injuring visitors and damaging nearby graves. This risk, responsibility of the mayor, must be controlled by the community. We are taking the opportunity to reorganize the site in terms of traffic in the aisles and encourage families to restore their graves ”, specifies Jean-Michel Guilbert, delegated councilor.

There are two types of concessions: perpetual and those expiring at the end of fifteen, thirty or fifty years.
” We are looking for
systematically

the descendants “

Perpetual concessions in a state of abandonment are identified by a display on site and, legally, without manifestation of the family, the City can dismantle the monument, deposit the remains in the ossuary, mentioning the identity of the people exhumed. The procedural period is three years.

“This is legal, but we are systematically looking for the descendants of the deceased. It’s exciting, painstaking work, and we’ve had great-grandchildren and nephews who have been happy to reconnect with their roots. Graves were thus saved ”, reports Bérénice Dantelle, secretary in the civil status department. For expired concessions, if there is no renewal, the locations return, two years after the expiry date, automatically to the municipality if the families do not come forward despite the reminders.

The graves of personalities, often linked to the mine, and the graves of soldiers who died for France are preserved and maintained by the City, as is the children’s square. For the soldiers, the French Souvenir brings its expertise and its support. The cemeteries are managed by the Gestcim software, accessible to all.

A cinerary space also exists in the Marizys cemetery, with a garden of remembrance and a columbarium.

Composed of five municipal councilors, Bérénice Dantelle, secretary of civil status, a few agents and Jean-Michel Guilbert, delegated councilor.
