It was announced on Wednesday that two inhabitants of Corona were found in the province of Groningen. These are a 21-year-old student from Groningen and a 62-year-old woman from Nieuwe Pekela.

Home insulation

The 62-year-old is in the hospital in Scheemda. As far as is known, none of the corona patients is admitted to a hospital in Drenthe. The two new patients in Drenthe are adults. Both are in home isolation. “As usual, the contact investigation around these persons is started,” says the GGD. On Thursday it was announced that a resident of Staphorst had also found corona. This patient also stays at home.

Don’t blindly stare at numbers

The GGD Drenthe reports every day at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. whether there are new infections and how many. Every day at 2 p.m. RIVM publishes the figure of the number of new people who have tested positive for the corona virus in the Netherlands. That has been above 500 since Wednesday. Sjaak van de Gouw of GGD Nederland says at the NOS that we should not blindly focus on the figures. According to him, it is not known exactly how many people in our country are infected with corona. It is certain, he says, that there are more than those figures show.

According to him, people who have minor complaints and come from a risk area are no longer automatically tested for corona since last Friday. They are advised to stay at home until they are free of complaints. Housemates of people who have tested positive are also no longer tested, even if they have symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath and fever.

“Housemates do not need to test from a public health point of view”

According to the RIVM, housemates are no longer being tested because other priorities are set due to the workload and the imminent scarcity of test material. Moreover, testing these people from a public health point of view is no longer necessary, because according to the experts, it is almost certain that they have been infected with corona by their housemate. They must remain in home isolation until they are free of symptoms for 24 hours. They should only report if their complaints worsen.
