Researchers at Columbia University’s Irving Medical Center have explained why non-smokers develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which can cause cancer. It is reported by Eurekalert.

COPD is most often diagnosed in smokers, but it can also develop in people without bad habits. So, 39% of patients never smoked.

To find out why people without addictions are susceptible to this disease, scientists analyzed the results of computed tomography (CT) scan of more than 6500 people.

It turned out that in people with an insufficient airway size relative to the lungs, COPD can develop regardless of lifestyle.

“Our results show that such disanapsis is the main risk factor for COPD – along with cigarette smoking. It is believed that disanapsis occurs at an early age. Understanding the biological basis of this process will help to influence the situation in the early stages of a person’s life and contribute to the normal development of the lungs,” concluded by scientists.
