Research project on heat development in Dresden continues

A research project to better adapt cities to heat is entering a second round. The researchers want to examine, among other things, how findings from the previously examined urban quarters of Dresden-Gorbitz and Erfurt-Oststadt can be transferred to other regions and municipalities, announced the Technical University and the city of Dresden on Tuesday. In addition, the effects of heat on other building types are to be examined. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the project for another two years with around 1.5 million euros.

Focus on health

The “Heat Resilient City” project has been investigating the question of how urban districts and buildings can be better adapted to heat since autumn 2017. In the next research phase, the topic of health is to come more into focus. “Long hot spells in summer are already having a negative impact on the well-being and health of large parts of the population in many places,” the statement said. As a result, among other things, a health network “heat prevention” and a manual with information on this topic will be created.

Several project partners

The Dresden Health Department is also involved in the project, along with the one in Erfurt. In addition to the two regional capitals, partners in the project are the Leibniz Institute for Ecological Spatial Development Dresden, the Technical University, the University of Technology and Economics in Dresden and the Institute for Urban Research, Planning and Communication at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt.
