Research Finds Prokes Covid-19 Makes Other Diseases ‘Disappear’

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia A recent study shows that the tightening measures and health protocols (prokes) Covid-19 put in place do not only prevent humans from spreading the corona virus. This process proved effective in curbing the transmission of other dangerous diseases.

Quotes South China Morning Post, According to research by scientists from the Provincial Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Jinan University, China, health promotions and restrictions on mobility during a pandemic also help prevent diseases such as dengue fever, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and influenza in the Guangdong region of Southern China.

Researchers in Guangdong found a nearly 81% decline in influenza in 2020 compared with the previous five-year average for their province of 126 million.

In addition, other diseases that experienced the greatest decline were dengue fever, down 98%, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, down 84%, dengue fever, down 80%, and pertussis down 64%.

“Our study shows that some [tindakan intervensi], such as border restrictions, quarantine and isolation, community management, social distancing, use of face masks, and encouragement of personal hygiene, will be very effective measures for the prevention and control of infectious diseases in developing countries. future,” the researchers wrote.

“That’s especially true for respiratory infections such as influenza, vector-borne diseases such as dengue fever, and intestinal diseases, such as hand-foot-and-mouth disease,” they added.

Epidemiologist Benjamin Cowling, a University of Hong Kong professor who was not involved in the study, said the findings corroborate similar research that has been done before.

“There are many reports of other infections disappearing due to Covid interventions, around the world, but this is quite comprehensive showing the impact on different types of infections,” he said.

However, the study’s co-authors predict that the decline in the number of infectious diseases may also be due to the Covid-19 outbreak, with people refusing to seek medical help due to concerns about the virus and medical institutions not operating normally.

“Overall, this study highlights the importance” of these interventions against infectious diseases, and suggests that some should remain a priority for future control of respiratory, insect and intestinal infectious diseases,” they concluded.
