Republican Hardliners Threaten Retaliation Against Debt Ceiling Deal

Hardline Republican lawmakers have threatened to retaliate against a deal between the White House and House Speaker McCarthy aimed at keeping the United States from defaulting.

U.S. Debt Ceiling Deal Heads for Congressional Passage in Avoidance of Default

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas said on Wednesday that House Republicans were “torn to pieces” by the deal and that “whatever happens, it will pay off.”

He and other members of the hardline Republican congressional group, the Freedom Caucus, did not say at the press conference whether they would seek McCarthy’s removal. But senior members of the parliamentary coalition have denounced the agreement in harsh terms.

Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, said the deal was “impossible.” Members of the parliamentary group said they would do everything in their power to block the bill from passing parliament.

Rep. Andy Biggs (Arizona) also criticized the debt ceiling agreement, calling it “one of the most disgusting events in my experience in Washington.”
