DONBASS – The Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) plans to hold a referendum on joining Russia in the near future.

The LPR is one of two Donbass regions that broke away from Ukraine and were recognized as independent by Moscow in late February.

According to an RT.com report on Monday (28/3/2022), there is no indication that the Kremlin will accept such a request. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the LPR’s independence, but most of the world considers it still part of Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, LPR Leader Leonid Pasechnik said he thought, “In the near future a referendum will be held in the republic, in which people will exercise their absolute constitutional right, and give their opinion regarding joining Russia.”

Commenting on the possibility of such a vote in the LPR, Russian Senator Andrey Klishas said on Sunday that both Luhansk and Donetsk have the right to join Russia unless the move goes against their constitution.
