Report: Traffic Remains High As PSBB Begins to Be Loosened

Jakarta, Selular.ID – During the COVID-19 pandemic, data traffic increased due to the implementation of lockdowns in various countries, or PSBB in Indonesia. This was triggered by work and study activities from home. Yes, the network is built to be able to deal with critical situations. Although the network was briefly on hold during the peak of peak demand, recent reports indicate that traffic levels remain high even as regional lockdowns begin to ease.

Nokia Deepfield released the latest Network Intelligence Report which analyzes network traffic to service providers and internet consumption trends in 2020, the analysis results show that the network is able to survive a year of up and down trends for internet businesses. The report examines the overall change in internet traffic patterns in the last decade and in 2020, with a focus on key application areas such as video streaming, video conferencing, gaming and Denials of Service (DDoS) security.

Since health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19 were implemented in March-April 2020, changes in consumer and business behavior are transforming the internet industry and how people use it. Many networks experience traffic growth of 30-50% in just a few weeks. In September, traffic has stabilized at 20-30% above pre-pandemic levels, with further seasonal growth in the future. From February to September, there was a 30% increase in video subscribers, a 23% increase in VPN end-points in the US, and a 40-50% increase in DDoS traffic.

In the decade preceding the pandemic, the internet had undergone profound and transformative changes – both in service provider networks and in the evolving internet architecture for cloud content delivery. The investment received in recent times is proof that the network business is in good shape and is largely ready to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Manish Gulyani, General Manager and Head of Nokia Deepfield, said: “Never before has there been so many sudden, or unexpected, network requests. With the network’s ability to provide connectivity that underpins businesses and people’s lives so that everything functions normally while we take shelter in self-quarantine at home, there is a greater need than ever for comprehensive multi-dimensional insights across networks, services, applications, and end users. . The Nokia Deepfield software application enables service providers to understand activity on their networks at this critical time. The data and insights we take for this report also show how service continuity can be ensured to create benefits for their customers. “

After monitoring network traffic over an eight month period, Nokia Deepfield identified five key points service providers could take to use in planning future network capacity and value-added services for their customers:

  1. The network is made to be able to deal with critical situations. Although the network was briefly on hold during the peak of demand, data from September 2020 shows that traffic levels remain high even as lockdowns begin to ease; This means that service providers need to continue to design network development for future business possibilities.
  2. Content delivery chains are constantly evolving. The demand for video streaming, low latency cloud gaming and video conferencing, as well as instant access to cloud applications and services, all put unprecedented pressure on the internet service delivery chain. Just as Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) have grown in the last decade, the same is expected to happen with edge / far edge clouds in the next decade – bringing content and compute closer to end users.
  3. The residential broadband network has become an important infrastructure. With increasing demand (upstream traffic up by more than 30%), the accelerated rollout of new technologies – such as 5G and next generation FTTH – will go a long way in improving access and connectivity in rural, remote and underserved areas. Better analytical insights allow service providers to continue to innovate and provide flawless service and customer experiences that build loyalty.
  4. Deep insight into network traffic is very important. Although the COVID-19 pandemic situation may prove to be changing many things, it is actually only accelerating the trends in content consumption, production and delivery that are already underway. Service providers need to be able to have real-time and detailed network insights – fully correlated with internet traffic insights – to get a holistic perspective on their networks, services and consumption.
  5. Security is very important. During the pandemic, DDoS traffic increased by between 40-50%. As broadband connectivity has now become an essential service, protecting network infrastructure and services is very important. Agile and cost-effective DDoS detection and automatic mitigation are the most important mechanisms for protecting service providers’ infrastructure and services.
