In order to focus on the virtual world “Metaverse”, there will be a name change in the coming week, reports the US technology portal “The Verge”. The portal, which is considered to be well connected, refers to a source “with direct knowledge of the matter”.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wanted to talk about it at the company’s Connect conference on October 28th. The change should signal the tech giant’s ambition to be known for more than just social media.
No comment from Facebook
According to the report, renaming the group would likely position the blue Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, Whatsapp, Oculus, and more. Facebook initially declined to comment.
Facebook wants to create 10,000 new, highly qualified jobs in the European Union in the next five years in order to build the virtual world “Metaverse”, as the company announced in a blog post.
