Reopening aborted for the Carnavalet museum after four years of work – Liberation

The entrance to the oldest museum in the capital, located in the heart of the Marais, was blocked by city officials working in the establishment, on strike over questions relating to working time.

Asked by AFP, the city of Paris said that the demands related to the establishment of 1,607 hours among the staff of the town hall. This is the legal working time imposed on all communities by the 2019 law on the transformation of the civil service, which put an end to exceptional situations. Paris Museums agents benefit from the same working time rules as City of Paris agents.

“The city of Paris is not at the initiative of this law, and the municipal executive disapproves of its objectives, unfortunately having no other choice but to implement it”, we defended ourselves in the city, while negotiations on the subject are underway with the unions.

Opened in 1880, the museum in the 3rd arrondissement has nearly 625,000 works retracing the history of Paris, from Prehistory to the present day, in two historic mansions in the Marais.
