Professor and Europe expert Mathieu Segers has died at the age of 47. This was announced by relatives 1Limburg.

Segers was professor of Contemporary European History and European Integration at Maastricht University, the city where he grew up. He wrote for Het Financieele Dagblad and De Groene Amsterdammer, among others. With his expertise he was a welcome guest on both radio and television programs.

He also made podcasts and wrote books. So he discussed in podcast Coffee Europe the consequences of the war in Ukraine for Europe. Among other things, gas extraction in Groningen was discussed.

Open about illness

Segers, father of three children, had been ill for some time. He was diagnosed with colon cancer at the end of 2020. The disease came to light when he went to the doctor for a corona test. On the advice of his doctor, he had an ultrasound scan which revealed the disease, he wrote The Limburger earlier.

The professor spoke openly about his illness. In the VPRO radio program The Marathon Interview two years ago, Segers called the time gained after the diagnosis. “You are actually all fighting against decay, that is a biological fact. So everything is a waste of time, but I am more aware of that now,” he said.

Segers called taking time difficult in our society, but has lived more consciously since his diagnosis: “That has a special effect. More seems to happen in an hour or in a day than before. While the opposite is the case. The non-binding is from everywhere.”
