‘Remote and yet a unity’: that is how the Netherlands experienced King’s Day

Due to the sunny weather, it became the first official warm King’s Day ever. It became 20.7 degrees in De Bilt, the highest national temperature on April 27 since Willem-Alexander took office in 2013.

Despite the sunny weather, according to the police, the holiday went very quietly. Up to 4 p.m., 65 people were nationally inspected.

The vast majority of people adhered to the corona measures. Only on the bicycle paths, the one and a half meter distance was not always properly monitored, the police reported. And in Groningen, a party in a youth club was stopped by officers.

Unique

It was also busier in some parks and in some squares in large cities than previous weekends. But the mayors emphasized that it was manageable.

“We experienced a unique King’s Day together,” said the mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema, at the end of the day. “Hopefully it will go again next year and the city will turn massive orange again.”
