Important instructions

This year, due to the pandemic, no guests are invited to a meal in the town hall. All invited guests and all interested citizens can follow the digital Matthiae meal online from home.

The Matthiae-Mahl 2021 will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.hamburg.de/matthiae-mahl, www.ndr.de/hamburg or in the social networks (Twitter: https://twitter.com/senat_hamburg, Facebook: www.facebook.com/senat.hamburg) transfer. In social networks (in addition to Twitter and Facebook also on Instagram: www.instagram.com/senat_hamburg) there is additional information under the hashtag # matthiae2021.

This year the focus will be on climate protection and the European Green Deal of the European Commission. Specifically, it will be discussed what contributions the major metropolises in Europe can make in order to make climate protection a reality as quickly as possible. Cities like Warsaw and Hamburg see this as one of their most important tasks and would like to win over other metropolises to work for stronger cooperation.

Mayor Trzaskowski is currently one of Poland’s most important politicians, who was only marginally inferior to the incumbent in last year’s presidential election. As mayor of the capital Warsaw, he is not only ambitiously involved in climate policy, he is also the rapporteur for the European Commission’s “Climate Pact” in the European Committee of the Regions, the assembly of regional and local representatives of the European Union.

The Matthiae-Mahl is the oldest still celebrated feast in the world. It has been historically documented in Hamburg since 1356 and traditionally serves to maintain relationships with “Hamburg’s benevolent powers”. Around 400 personalities are usually invited to the event, which takes place every February: representatives from politics, business, science and culture as well as the entire consular corps of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
