Remembering Franco Migliacci: The Iconic Lyricist Behind Italian Music History

The lyricist died at the age of 92 in a Roman clinic Franco Migliacciauthor among other successes of In the blue painted blue with Domenico Modugno. During his career he wrote countless songs for many artists such as Tint of the moon o Have your mother send you for milk, A roundabout on the sea as well as There was a boy.

Long-time collaborator of Gianni MorandiMigliacci had never stopped writing and being present in the national pop panorama: he was one of the authors of I belong to you Of Amber Angiolini. The journalist and television presenter broke the news on X Clemente Drinking: “Franco Migliacci, lyricist of some of the most beautiful Italian songs (including ‘nel blu dipinto di blu’), record producer, music publisher and talent scout, died at the age of 92 in a Roman clinic. Next to him, until the end, his family.”

The beginnings as an illustrator

Born in Mantua in 1930, Migliacci studied in Florence where his father, Marshal of the Guardia di Finanza, was transferred in 1934. But his parents’ insistence on him studying accounting did not, fortunately for music lovers, have any success: the young Franco discovered in fact it is clear that his true passion is art in all its expressions, from literature to entertainment, from music to figurative art. Perhaps not everyone knows that, as reported in the biography on his online site, at the beginning of his career he was an illustrator, and drew stories for children’s newspapers: ‘Bambola’ and ‘Lupettino’ directed by Nino Capriati, ‘Il Pioniere’ directed by Gianni Rodari.

The meeting with Modugno

During the auditions for the film ‘Carica eroica’ he met Domenico Modugno, and the two became inseparable friends. For Migliacci it is a precious friendship because Domenico, known as Mimmo, already enjoys considerable success with the public and critics. From their personal and artistic collaboration, the famous ‘Nel blu painted di blu’ (Volare) was born in 1957, which has become an anthem and symbol of Italy in the world. In 1960 he began to collaborate with other artists.

The great Italian song (and cartoons)

He writes among others for Mina, Milva, Fred Bongusto, Rita Pavone and Patty Pravo. But the greatest successes came with Gianni Morandi, for whom he wrote songs such as ‘I was going at one hundred per hour,’ ‘Have your mother send you to get milk’, ‘In kneeling by you’ and ‘There was a boy who like I loved the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.’ In the 1980s he wrote the lyrics for his first two albums and the famous song ‘Ancora’ for Eduardo De Crescenzo, and produced Scialpi with ‘Rocking Rolling’ and ‘Pregherei’, bringing him success. In the nineties he collaborated on the creation of the album ‘T’Appartengò by Ambra Angiolini, a great success of the generation of those years. His musical eclecticism also leads him to write theme songs for cartoons such as ‘Daltanious’, ‘Heidi’, ‘The New Adventures of Lupine III’ and Mazingà. Migliacci died this morning at the age of 92 in a Roman clinic, flying forever ‘in the blue painted blue’ but leaving indelible songs in the history of Italian music.
