Reject Swab Test, Madura Residents Challenge Suramadu Officers’ Duel

Surabaya, CNN Indonesia

A Madurese who was caught in a blockage at the Bridge Suramadu, on the Surabaya side, challenged the officers on duty for allegedly refusing the antigen swab test.

The action was caught on a video and circulated on social media. One of the 38-second videos was uploaded by the Instagram account @teluuur.

At first the man wearing a black shirt, jeans and black cap was angry in front of the antigen swab test tent belonging to the BPBD of East Java Province. He did not accept, and then challenged the officers to a duel with him.

“Come duel with me!” the man shouted to the officers.

A number of officers from the Satpol PP, TNI, and Polri who were at the location then tried to calm the man by embracing him and taking him away from the tent.

But the Madurese’s anger only got worse. As a result, a police officer who was at the scene then dropped him.

When confirmed, the Head of the Surabaya Tanjung Perak Port Police, AKBP Ganis Setyaningrum, confirmed the incident. The man had refused to undergo a swab test and fought officers.

“It is true that they refused and resisted,” said Ganis, Tuesday (8/6).

Ganis said the man was from Sampang, Madura and intended to go to the city of Surabaya but was reluctant to do a swab when he was caught in a blockade.

“From Sampang,” he said.

Now, the man has admitted his mistake and apologized. This was after the person concerned received instructions from officers in the field.

“I have apologized, after being given an explanation by the Head of Traffic who was there at the time,” he said.

Furthermore, Ganis said, in carrying out the insulation task in Suramadu, officers needed patience and calm in dealing with such communities.

Officers, he said, need to take humanist approaches to residents. Even if necessary, use the Madurese local language.

“Also use the Madurese language if necessary,” he said.

This, he said, was so that the public would understand that what was being done in the isolation at Suramadu was for the sake of mutual safety.
