Regional Train with Hundreds of Passengers Crashes into Tree on Salzburg-Munich Route Due to Storm Zoltan: No Injuries Reported

According to the Federal Police, a regional train with several hundred passengers crashed into a tree on the Salzburg-Munich route. This was twisted and fell onto the tracks due to storm Zoltan. Around 500 passengers had to be taken off the Meridian train.

The accident occurred around 4 p.m. between Aßling and Grafing in the Upper Bavarian district of Ebersberg. No one was injured, although part of the overhead power line was torn down in the incident. The evacuation in the difficult-to-access forest was difficult and took several hours.

Passengers on the train help each other

The passengers on the train, including several families with children, were patient, reported a BR reporter on board the train. Those affected provided each other with food and drink. “From that point of view, the mood is quite okay.”

For some people, getting off on an open stretch of road without a platform was only possible with outside support. Numerous fire departments in the area were on site. The travelers were taken from the forest in vehicles and on buses to the Grafing S-Bahn station. The evacuation of the meridian was completed after around four hours.

Rail traffic disrupted after train accident

Rail traffic between Munich and Rosenheim was stopped. Two other trains that were already on the route were withdrawn to stations.

The overhead line in the municipality of Aßling had to be repaired by midday. In Bavaria, sections of the railway have been closed repeatedly since Friday due to blown-down trees or torn branches.
