The Earth Overshoot Day (in German about “Earth Overload Day” or “World Exhaustion Day”) on August 22nd is a reminder that from this day on, mankind lives beyond its means and uses more resources than the earth can regenerate by the end of the year. This fact inspired the Viennese green tech startup refurbed for the “Do I really need that?” Campaign. The aim is to encourage people to rethink their consumption habits and to interact socially. As part of the campaign, refurbed plants for every posting and every visitor to your campaign page “www.fix-our-planet.com“A tree – currently there are already more than 13,000 pieces in total.

A current generation smartphone requires around 13,000 liters of water in production and emits 79 kg of CO2 out. These are numbers that show us that our planet, with its current population of around eight billion, cannot provide inexhaustible resources. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear how fragile and unsustainable our production and consumption system is. After the lockdown and the associated containment measures, Earth Overshoot Day 2020 has been postponed for the first time by more than three weeks compared to previous years – from July 29 to August 22.

“That shows a perspective. It is possible to change the lifestyle and the associated consumption of our planet’s resources. Each and every one of us is called upon to review and rethink our consumer behavior. At refurbed, we are convinced that technological progress in combination with sustainability is not only possible but necessary, ”says Peter Windischhofer, co-founder of refurbed. For this reason, refurbed has addressed this important issue with the social campaign “Do I really need this?”. The intention behind it: To show that every individual’s purchase decision has a global impact and to bring Earth Overshoot Day into the consciousness of people. Furthermore, it should be conveyed that the waste of non-renewable resources and the protection of the ecosystem must be kept in mind.

The campaign is active in Austria as well as in Germany and Italy. In Berlin, refurbed has also set up a pop-up store in which it is not (!) Possible to buy something, and thus follows the “don’t buy” principle. Ad hoc pages have been created on Instagram to illustrate the amount of water required to make certain products and foods (@ smartphone.in.waterbottles, @ avocado.in.watterbottles, @ burger.in.waterbottles, @ jeans.in .watterbottles) is used.

As part of the campaign, refurbed is planting a tree for every post that is tagged with #FixOurPlanet. In addition, those interested have access to the specially created website www.fix-our-planet.com the possibility of opting against consumption and in favor of a tree. Together with 30 influencers from the fields of fashion, sport, travel, sustainability and lifestyle, who also collect trees through their community – every swipe-up counts – more than 13,000 trees have come together within 15 days.

Like new, only better

The campaign is evidence of refurbed’s ambition to contribute to a more sustainable future. “The aim of the campaign is to curb consumption in general. If products are nevertheless bought, then the decision to buy should be made on sustainable alternatives, such as refurbed devices, i.e. completely renewed electronic devices. These not only enable CO2-Emissions, but also to reduce the amount of electronic waste and water waste. And that without having to forego aesthetics, functionality and comfort at the same time. At the end of the day, every single tree that we can plant together counts, ”says Windischhofer.

The promotion ends on August 22nd – Earth Overshoot Day. More information about the campaign at www.fix-our-planet.com and www.instagram.com/fix.our.planet.
