Around 1,300 workers organized in the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace have already signed up, a union representative said. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said approximately 1,200 of its members had agreed to participate in the Boeing severance program.
The agencies Bloomberg and Reuters, as well as the Puget Sound Business Journal, citing unions, had previously reported that Boeing was facing significant job cuts.
The aircraft manufacturer did not want to comment on this.
Union officials say the Job cuts particularly affect the civil aviation business, which came under massive pressure in the wake of the corona pandemic. In the past month, Boeing’s top management had already come up with ideas about reducing its workforce of around 160,000 worldwide by around 10 percent this year.
Boeing stock temporarily rose 0.68 percent to $ 145.72 in US trading on the NYSE on Wednesday.
