Red and White Can’t Fly in the Thomas Cup, this is what PBSI says

Jakarta

PBSI regretted that Indonesian badminton had to be affected by sanctions from WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency. Indonesia cannot fly the red and white flag on the podium Thomas Cup 2020.

This was conveyed by the Head of Foreign Relations of PBSI, Bambang Roedyanto, following the statement of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) that he received.

According to him, the men’s team team, which currently has tickets to the Thomas Cup final, cannot use the Red and White flag on the podium.

“(Indonesia) uses the PBSI flag because this is an ordinary tournament, and not a regional one. For the Olympics, the NOC (National Olympic Committee) flag will be used,” said Roedy to detiksport, Sunday (17/10/2021).

“Unfortunate? Yes, that’s how it is. But the Minister of Youth and Sports said this is not a serious problem. What’s going on?” he regrets.

Not only about not being able to fly the Red and White flag, the fact is that Indonesia is also prohibited from participating in bidding to host multi-events. This was conveyed by BWF via a short Whatsapp message.

“The notice is like that. So we can bid for regular tournaments, but we can’t bid for the Asian Games, SEA Games, and World Championships. That’s a letter from the BWF,” Roedy revealed.

Regarding the impact of the sanctions given by WADA, Roedy also said that if: Menpora have known the result.

“The Minister of Youth and Sports already knows. I don’t want to communicate (continued) because it’s not my business, but the Secretary General (PBSI). I’m only part of the negotiations and I don’t have the right to talk to the Menpora because it’s part of the foreign sector,” he asserted.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) aka the National Anti-Doping Agency previously said that Indonesia was not compliant because it did not implement an effective testing program. As a result, Indonesia was declared ineligible to host regional and world championships during the suspension, as well as not being eligible to sit as a board member on the committee.

Indonesia is still allowed to participate in competitions in regional, continental and world championships but is not allowed to carry a name and fly the country’s flag other than the Olympics.

Indonesia through the Menpora Zainudin Amali has attempted to send a confirmation letter regarding the threat of sanctions and WADA has also responded.

Indonesia is welcome to carry out activities including running the National Sports Week (PON) and Peparnas Papua 2021.

As for future activities, WADA has allocated or appointed Japan as Indonesian supervision.
