Red alert: strong storm expected north of the Alps and in the mountains – Switzerland

According to the message from Meteoswitzerland on Saturday, the gusts of wind on the north side of the Alps and in the Alps are likely to reach 100 to 140 km / h (km / h) in exposed locations. On the mountains above 1000 meters, 130 to 180 km / h are expected, over 2000 meters even 160 to 200 km / h.

The level 4 wind warning – it indicates great danger and corresponds to the second highest of five danger warning levels – applies in parts of northwestern Switzerland from Sunday evening. From Monday, this warning level will apply to the entire north side of the Alps. “Sabine” is likely to rage the most on Monday morning.

In inner-alpine areas from the Valais via the Gotthard region to the Graubünden mountains, the hurricane gusts are likely to be somewhat weaker. The lower warning level 3 therefore applies to these areas.

In the foehn valleys on the north side of the Alps, there is also a temporary stormy foehn at night on Monday. The meteorologists expect gust peaks of 90 to 130 km / h. The blow dryer should blow particularly hard in the Uri Reuss Valley and in the Rhine Valley.

Damage cannot be ruled out in strong storms. Objects could be carried away, roof tiles removed or trees knocked over, warns Meteo-Swiss. The winds could trigger high waves on lakes. If possible, stays in the open should be avoided and instructions given by the authorities should be followed.
