It was the first night of the academic year, and traditionally the Overpoortstraat beckons for many students. It is the most famous nightlife area in Ghent, where there are many student cafes. Despite corona, many students also had the same idea last night.
“There was a lot of people. The terraces were full, the cafes were at maximum capacity and there was also a lot of people walking back and forth in the Overpoortstraat”, says chief inspector Eva Houpels of the Ghent police. There have been no incidents, but images do indeed show how the students barely keep their distance and often stand together in large groups.
