Record tight labor market: never before so many vacancies and so few people

In the last five quarters for which the UWV has data, tension on the labor market quickly mounted. Since the beginning of last year, the economy has recovered from the corona crisis, which has created a lot of demand for staff. In the past year, the number of vacancies increased by 80 percent.

The offer is just meager. The group of people who have been on unemployment benefit for less than six months has almost halved. This group of people, who have only been out of work for a short time, are most likely to find work again quickly. That is why the UWV uses this criterion to measure the tension in the labor market.

Almost all professions

The shortage is spreading across the entire economy. There are only four professions where there is no shortage of suitable personnel. Anyone looking for drivers, assistants for construction and industry, painters or tour guides still succeeds relatively easily, according to the UWV.

The other 88 occupational categories used by the institution are in a tight or even very tight situation.
