Record of deceased people of covid-19 in Florida

AFP / EEUU

Florida reported its worst day of the covid-19 pandemic Thursday, reporting 156 deaths, a record confirming that the southern state has become the epicenter of the epidemic in the United States.

Deaths follow the exponential increase in infections seen since early June, given the time between infection, hospitalization, and death.

The Florida Department of Health said all 156 people died in the past few days or weeks, but the deaths were confirmed in the past 24 hours.

The previous record in death toll was recorded on Tuesday.

14,000 new cases were also reported this Thursday, almost a record.

The number of hospitalizations, meanwhile, increased in almost 500 patients in the last 24 hours.

Florida is the state in the United States that diagnoses most new cases every day, ahead of California and Texas, whose daily reports report around 10,000 cases.

More than 315,000 Florida residents have been infected to date.

Governor Ron DeSantis was close to closing the bars at the end of June (instead banning the sale of alcohol), but has not ordered any new confinements and, unlike his Texas and California counterparts, refuses to force use the mask in closed spaces.

It is in Florida where President Donald Trump will be invested, in August, as a Republican Party candidate for the presidential elections on November 3.

The governor also asked Florida schools to reopen completely in August, even where the outbreaks are most active, a decision opposed by many officials in the local education sector.
