20 minutes – The fear of being too big does not weigh heavily

In Switzerland, 42% of the population is currently overweight and 11% is even obese. The trend is increasing: the number of obese people has doubled since 1992, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

This Wednesday, March 4, as part of the world day of this affection, the Swiss Foundation for Observations (Foso) is sounding the alarm. More men (51%) than women (33%) are affected by obesity or overweight in Switzerland. But only around 10% of them seek help and advice from us, notes Heinrich von Grnigen, president of Foso.

Social pressures feel less on the male sex, underlines the foundation. Social constraints in terms of appearance are especially felt by women. The fear of being too big is common among adolescents and men, says Heinrich von Grnigen.

Men and women facing equal risks

However, the pathologies linked to weight are identical for both sexes. Hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, joint problems, cancer or even sleep apnea do not vary according to gender.

To regain health, it is generally necessary to massively reduce body weight, often from 50 to 100 kg. Professional help and follow-up is therefore crucial.

The current obesity treatment centers are all gender neutral, underlines the foundation, which participated in the development of a charter asking to de-stigmatize the sick.
