Record Number of Candidates Compete for Aargau National Council Seats

Rush for the Aargau National Council seats

New record: 713 candidates are applying for a seat in the National Council in Aargau. From the Fricktal there are 31 women and 46 men. Four years ago there were only 55 candidates from Fricktal.

In a good ten weeks, on October 22nd, a new federal parliament will be elected in Switzerland. The electorate is not yet aware of the election campaign, but that is likely to change soon. If one infers the intensity of the political competition from the number of candidatures, Aargau and Fricktal are likely to face a heated autumn election. A total of 713 candidates (291 women and 422 men) are applying in the canton for one of the 16 seats in the National Council to which Aargau is entitled in Bern. That is significantly more than four years ago, when 496 candidatures were registered. The parties and groups submitted a total of 52 lists and sub-lists this time.

The Fricktal is in no way inferior to the rest of the canton: 31 female and 46 female Fricktalers have been put on the lists. Four years ago there were only 55 Fricktaler, eight years ago only 35. The 77 Fricktaler candidatures this time should represent a new record.

As in 2019, the “middle” (then still the CVP) is coming up with a large contingent. A total of 19 Fricktal residents are candidates for this party. It even has its own sub-list “for the Fricktal”, and it also has such lists in other regions. The strategy of the “middle”, which has a main list and nine sub-lists, seems to be to nominate as many people as possible in order to get as many votes as possible. Four years ago she was able to score points with it, whether it will work again this time remains to be seen. For comparison: The SVP, as the party with the most votes in Aargau, only enters the race with its main list and a sub-list (Young SVP). Six men and one woman are running for the People’s Party from Fricktal. The SP is running with eight candidates from Fricktal, the FDP with twelve and the Greens with seven. The Green Liberals and the EVP each have ten Fricktal candidacies, the EDU three and “Mass-Voll” one.

Since the last elections in 2019, Fricktal has had no representation in the National Council. At that time, the long-standing federal politician Maximilian Reimann from Gipf-Oberfrick was no longer ported by the SVP and consequently missed re-election on his own “Team65+” list. October 22 will show whether a Fricktaler will make the election this time. Christoph Riner from Zeihen is in seventh place on the SVP list, right after the previous six. So certain chances can be attested to him, perhaps also Désirée Stutz (SVP) from Möhlin, Colette Basler (SP) from Zeihen and Alfons Paul Kaufmann (middle) from Wallbach.
