ANNOUNCEMENTS

A record number of ATMs were blown up in Germany this year. According to the newspaper The World on Sunday At least 450 vending machines have been subject to a crash so far. Most of the explosive attacks were committed by evacuating the Dutch.

Crimes are increasingly being committed with explosives, where gas was mainly used before, the president of the German detectives’ association told the newspaper. According to him, the suspects accept that there may be dead people.

“Pedestrians have already been injured, metal parts have ended up in children’s rooms and houses have become uninhabitable,” he explains.

‘Adhesive Techniques’

Unsurprisingly, many of the suspects are from the Netherlands. Also last year, half of all bomb attacks in Germany were committed by the Dutch. Welt Am Sonntag writes that German banks, unlike the Netherlands, do not use “sticking techniques” to deter criminals. This quickly glues the bills together, making them unusable.

According to the newspaper, both the German government and the president of the investigative association are asking banks to better protect their ATMs. The Minister of the Interior would even consider an obligation to do so.

More and more explosions

In October, Europol raised the alarm about the growing number of bomb attacks in Europe, particularly in Germany, southern Europe and the Baltic states. A spokesman for the investigative organization then spoke of “modern bank robberies” with “extremely unscrupulous” perpetrators.

There are now fewer bomb attacks in the Netherlands than before, because banks are adopting safety measures. For example, ATMs have been closed at night since the end of 2019 and banks are taking steps to render the money unusable.
