Record hot June in several places in Norway – VG

The warmest day was registered in Troms and Finnmark, while Svalbard set several records, the Meteorological Institute writes in a press release on Friday.

As many as 44 stations set a record for the highest maximum temperature measured in June. 22 of these were in Troms and Finnmark, 16 in Nordland. Trøndelag registered three records, Rogaland two and Svalbard one.

The average temperature for the whole country was 1.5 degrees above normal in June.

A new county record was set in Troms and Finnmark for the highest maximum temperature of 32.5 degrees at Banak in Porsanger on 29 June.

Tropical night all over the country

Night to Friday, Oslo had its first tropical night of the year, writes NRK. The lowest temperature during the night was 20.1. A total of 25 weather stations around the country registered a tropical night in June.

For a night to be considered a tropical night, it must be over 20 degrees from 8 pm in the evening until 8 am the next morning.

– The high temperatures are a clear signal of climate change. The summer is on average both longer and warmer, and we get more temperature peaks, says Jostein Mamen, climate researcher at the Meteorological Institute.

Record temperatures in the Arctic

It is very hot in the Arctic, according to the Meteorological Institute. Svalbard Airport had the highest average temperature at 6 degrees through June. It is 2.4 degrees above normal and the highest temperature recorded here in June. The previous record was 5.7 degrees in 2007.

– The region around the northern Barents Sea has a warming that is 2 to 2.5 times higher than the average in the Arctic, and as much as 5 to 7 times higher than the global average, says Ketil Isaksen, climate researcher at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Ny-Ålesund also registered record temperatures: here it was an average temperature of 5.7 degrees in June. This corresponds to 2.7 degrees above normal.
